High Schools Resist Change

The recently formed National Alliance on the American High
School has released a report examining trends and assumptions
in state high school education policy. The report finds that, despite
years of education reform, high schools have remained relatively unchanged.
Policymakers should devote more attention to innovative secondary
education approaches, the report says.

Are We There Yet?

According to a survey on School Technology by the National
School Boards Foundation, nearly 30% of school leaders think
that one in five students will soon receive a substantial portion
of their instruction over the Internet. But the survey also found that
schools are still unable to take full advantage of technology to teach

Meeting the Need for High Quality Teachers

Some teacher education experts did not react well to the criticism
contained in Education Secretary Rod Paige's recent report on teacher
quality. Paige maintains that teacher colleges are spending too much
